2 Wheels Maybe

I am excited! I looked on Electrek today and found a Radwagon article by one of my favorite e-bike journalists, Micah Toll. (You may also know Micah from e-Bike School , Vruzend Battery Kits, DIY Solar Power , and a plethora of other greenie projects.) In the Mesquite Hugger/2Wheel universe, no singular vehicle has appeared in print more than the Radwagon. Not even the Citicar comes close. And it makes sense - I have not run across another vehicle that embodies the quest for an enjoyable, inexpensive, low-carbon personal hauler more than the big orange bike from Seattle(ish). It seems that the people who read this blog [I am very thankful for all four of you!] prefer posts that include cargo bikes, electric bikes, or klunkers. So, I thought to myself, Why not feature all the electric cargo klunkers I can find? And I started the search.  The only one I had stored in my memory was available at Luna Cycle a few years ago... It was a beast, but I haven't seen it on their site for quite a while. You could buy it fully built or you could order a bare frame. For what it was, it was quite cheap and really wild.. As I kept searching, I decided it would just be smarter to seek out turn-key electric klunkers . And that didn't pan out too well either. So I searched for electric cruiser bikes and got a lot closer. Two of the first klunker-ish electric bikes were from the same company - Vintage Electric Bikes. Upcycling, we love upcycling around here, especially when you take something old, unloved, and (possibly) polluting and turn it into something useful, appreciated, and green. With that in mind, today's post features two very tasty Honda cycles being reborn as modern electrics. The first is new to these pages, but the guy doing the conversion is not new around here. Micah Toll is the driving force behind EbikeSchool , a writer for Electrek.co, and part of the team responsible for the Vruzend (battery building) Kit -  the kit I used to build the battery for the e-Klunker. Let's just jump into it: Convercycle The Convercycle (Click for original post) The Kickstarter was fully funded and closed, but you can still get one on Indiegogo for 40% off. Nope, I've never seen something listed on both, but the Convercycle fully funded on both crowdfunding sites. So, yes, you can still order yourself this transformer electric cargo bike for $1249 (before shipping) and can hope for it to be delivered this August. Dang, that thing is cool! Fly Free Smart Motorcycle The Old, The Classic, and the Desert (Click for original post) Fly Free introduced the third in their new trilogy this week. The newest is the Smart Old . (Yes, I love oxymorons!) Basically, these three are the same bike, but they are all dressed in different clothes. I'm torn -the Classic is my favorite to look at, the old would fit most of my riding, but the Desert's tall bars would make my back like it best. (And my back has a loud voice when choosing a ride.) ...

I love it when a project comes together! Nope, I can't quite say it's finished, but I can say that it's ride-able. And that's a big pedal in the right direction. Hub motors - aren't they sexy? The most recent progress came in determining that the geared motor I had planned for the bike has a problem. So I swapped it out with the direct-drive motor from another project and now it runs! The (Harbor-Freight/Dollar-Tree sourced) DIY PAS sensor (none too pretty, none too functional) What's left? My home-made PAS magnet sensor is not doing the trick - pedal assist is really important to me - so I have to fix that. I need to find a better home for the battery (that blue thing on the back in the first pic. I am leaning toward the $16 frame bag that Micah recommends . I had been thinking of a box on the rear rack, but the frame bag would offer a lower center of gravity and free the rack up for panniers and cargo and looking less dorky. ...
