Speaking of electric mopeds... the Moto and the Monday Gateways

[Blogger Note: In our Bring on the Electric Mopeds! post, we looked at four companies building electric motorbikes that strongly resemble the old 2-stroke mopeds of the 1970's. Of those four companies, two had their roots in classic mopeds and two started as e-bike builders. In this post, we'll feature two more designed and built by vintage mopedders. It's a great time to be an e-bike blogger!]

I seemed to have developed a YouTube problem. Yep, I'm watching too much YT these days, but there's so much good stuff out there.

In the never-ending quest for electric 2Wheelers, one channel that I keep going back to is Moped Problems. Five years ago the channel started detailing the life of a (gas-powered) moped shop in New York, but back in February of 2018 an interloper appeared on the channel - a Super 73 electric bike. And that opened the door for an electron-fueled revolution. By November of 2018 they announced their intention to build an e-moped! In one short year they not only built it - last week they also launched an Indiegogo campaign to sell them. Check it out!

If you checked out our last e-moped post, you've seen the Monday MotorBikes M-1 and the Onyx RCR. The Moto is almost a blend of those two bikes. It rides on a frame modeled after the famed Puch Magnum (like the Monday and the Onyx). Like the Monday, it has a mid-drive motor. Like the Onyx, it has no pedals.

My favorite part of the Moto is that (unlike the Monday or the Onyx) this thing is built to be titled and ridden as a street-legal electric motorbike. If you live in a state (like I do) that requires a moped to be licensed, this thing gives you the ability to be all legal and stuff. (Yes, I know, I'm old and boring.)

Liking the specs a lot

So, that means the Moto is that mythical beast I've been wishing for - a midpoint between the electric Grom clones and the full-fledged electric motorcycles like the Zero. This is the moderately-priced but full-sized, in-town electric motorbike that will stay up with traffic. With capabilities and specifications similar to the ill-fated Brooklyn Motorized and the still up-in-the-air Fly Free Smart bikes and a retail price under $4000 (or under $3000 if you snap up one of the first 40) this could be the one. Yes, I am super-stoked to see this one make it to market!

Loving the Early Bird price!

Second-Stroke Moped crew, godspeed!

 The Monday Gateways

(If you're a fan of the Juiced Scorpion from our previous e-moped post, pay close attention to these!)

Another big moped surprise to pop up this week is the second model from Monday Motorbikes. They've just released a step-through frame in two very different trim levels. For me the differences are these - the slower one has pedals and street tires, the faster one has dirt tires and no pedals. And, of course, the faster one costs more.

Condensed Gateway Specs

It's really cool to see Monday Motorbikes expanding their line-up. For a few years now they've been continually updating their one model, so people looking at the Gateways can have the benefit of all that product evolution. (Their original model is high on my list of favorite electric two-wheelers!)

Monday is growing!

The Monday Gateway Booster (35mph, 30 mile range, no pedals)
$2099 early-bird price

The Monday Gateway (30mph, 30 mile range)
$1435 early-bird price

More Gateway specs

(I'll take mine in Royal Blue, with pedals, thank you!)

Expected delivery is in April 2020 for you brave IndieGoGoers.

So, there you have it, folks - two more tempting ways to leave that dino juice behind while enjoying the ride! Be well and breathe free!
