A New Turn-Key Klunker Gets Rode Hard - and Survives!

Image
[ Intrusive Narrator Sidebar 1 : Before you get too excited, this is another post about a bike you can buy in Canada but not in the US, snagit!] Cheap , Cargo , and Klunker - when you think of those words, I hope you think of 2Wheels Maybe . In my quest to make that happen, I scour the entire world North America to find cheap cargo bikes and klunkers. If you're going to ride a green machine, well, it might as well be odd and fun. So, I'm very excited to tell you that I found another cheap-ish klunker! Woohoo! I found it by bravely searching the wilds of youtube. It's the Columbia Rambler. Ironically, the Rambler is an updated version of a bike called the Columbia Klunker, but the Rambler is more of a klunker than the Klunker was. And it comes in three sizes. The Columbia Klunker was a multi-speed bike that was more of a comfort hybrid bike in a klunker-ish frame.  The new Columbia Rambler 24" (at Walmart Canada) But the Rambler, like most tra...

Electric Car Spotting in Lubbock 2013-2019

Image
Here at 2Wheels, we love electric cars. Any car that runs without a tailpipe and runs on renewable energy - that's good stuff! The electric car is not the weapon to fight climate change, but one of many steps to get us closer to a livable world. My First West Texas Tesla 2013 But here in Lubbock, the electric wheels have turned slowly. Last Sunday's front page I've kept a daily watch for electric cars in Lubbock several years now. Three years ago I was starting to get excited. I was seeing more and more - three to four per day. In a town with a quarter million people, it may not sound like much, but it was a start. An LBK Electric Car Spotting from 2014 Lately, though, it's been slipping. I've been mostly seeing one per day. There has been a big shift in what I'm seeing. Now I see more Teslas than Leafs and Volts. My daily spotting is scattered pretty evenly among the Tesla Models 3, S, and X. I've been driving a lot more lately. I'...

The Huff-Klunk Journal - First MTB Ride

Image
This past week, a rare opportunity presented itself. I went riding strictly for fun! I built the Huffy Klunker specifically for riding the bike trails at Lubbock's own Mae Simmons Park and I finally got to try it out. (It says, "I'm stumped".) I headed west on the faster trails, but the gravelly uphills were more challenge than I was up for, so I headed east where the trail is more level, has great curves, gentle berms, and a plethora of mesquite trees, prairie dogs, and seven-lined skinks - all great stuff for a mesquite hugger like me. What did the fish yell when it swam into a concrete wall? There were lots of birds out too. My favorite was a snowy egret stalking the mossy shallows below the dam. Ignore the finger and check out the view - water, windmills, and trees! The riding was a blast. There were a couple of jerseyed guys my age out there on 29" fully-suspended rigs. I hope they were having fun and getting away from thei...

Interesting EV's on Dallas CL: 12 Wheels, 4 Wheels, 3 Wheels, and 2 Wheels

Image
Taken on the Texas Tech campus Earlier this week I posted a pic (on Mesquite Hugger ) of a little electric Vantage GreenVan that D and I encountered as we were dropping off our recycling. And, as per usual, it sparked a lot of curiosity about oddball electric vehicles for me. So, I soon found a Vantage trio for sale on the Dallas Craigslist. They're in Aubrey, Texas, a little northeast of Denton. Woohoo! $1333 each! If only the little guys were fully street legal and a bit faster... Two of three on one trailer! I would not call them pretty, but, oh, the places you'll go fossil free! While I was on the DFW CL, I had to poke around a bit and saw this electro-pumpkin just east of Dallas. I've seen it for sale before, but it always needed work to get it going. Now it's a runner and a runner at a pretty reasonable price.  Sure, it won't haul as much as three Vantages, but it'll haul at least twice as fast and will incite ra...

Vintage Voltage: A Bit About Jet Industries EVs

Image
From  Mr. Rogers Neighborhood  to the  almighty CitiCar , one of our favorite sidelines around here at the Mesquite Hugger/2 Wheels Maybe Command Center is the quest to learn more about EVs from our not-so-distant past. Today's installment started right down in the heart of Texas - Austin, the home of Jet Industries. What a sexy line-up ( Find it here ) For me, the fascination started with the Electravan. The tiny van got me. I love funky vans, I love tiny cars, I love EVs - the Electravan is all of those! And there're two added bonuses: it's street legal and it's from my home state. Yep, the Electravan and me - we be toit! Learn more about the ElectraVan on Generation High Output (Truth be told, this is the vintage electric car I want the most.) A short Jet Industries history and anecdotal report on DIY Electric Car The only one of these I've seen up for sale Jet Industries on EVAlbum (Page 1 of 4) A Jet ...

Turn-Key Electric Klunker Bikes

Image
It seems that the people who read this blog [I am very thankful for all four of you!] prefer posts that include cargo bikes, electric bikes, or klunkers. So, I thought to myself, Why not feature all the electric cargo klunkers I can find? And I started the search.  The only one I had stored in my memory was available at Luna Cycle a few years ago... It was a beast, but I haven't seen it on their site for quite a while. You could buy it fully built or you could order a bare frame. For what it was, it was quite cheap and really wild.. As I kept searching, I decided it would just be smarter to seek out turn-key electric klunkers . And that didn't pan out too well either. So I searched for electric cruiser bikes and got a lot closer. Two of the first klunker-ish electric bikes were from the same company - Vintage Electric Bikes. I've been a fan of VEB since I saw this video back in 2014. They are beautiful and powerful bikes but I seldom write about ...
