2 Wheels Maybe

I am excited! I looked on Electrek today and found a Radwagon article by one of my favorite e-bike journalists, Micah Toll. (You may also know Micah from e-Bike School , Vruzend Battery Kits, DIY Solar Power , and a plethora of other greenie projects.) In the Mesquite Hugger/2Wheel universe, no singular vehicle has appeared in print more than the Radwagon. Not even the Citicar comes close. And it makes sense - I have not run across another vehicle that embodies the quest for an enjoyable, inexpensive, low-carbon personal hauler more than the big orange bike from Seattle(ish). Micah Toll on the Radwagon (on Electrek.co) Indeed, the Radwagon has been my yardstick for green vehicles since it hit the market. $1500 (shipped) gets you a machine that'll haul close to 400 pounds and let you enjoy the world immensely while not making you feel like you're on display in your own little people aquarium. When I was kid growing up in Odessa, I never realized how cool it was that there were so many nifty old microcars around. (But I always thought they were the coolest.) I remember seeing one Messerschmitt driving, I located two BMW Isettas in backyards, and I drooled every time I saw the two Austin Minis. The first Mini was a Brtitish racing green Clubman Panel (across the street from Bowie Jr. High) and the second was an old Mini Cooper in full race mode - BBS wheels, fender flares, rally lights, and a racy three-tone paint job (blue, yellow, white). It even had racing numbers on the doors and lots of stickers in the quarter windows. (Strangely, it was also across the street from a junior high - Bonham.) So cool. To this day, I still very badly want an old mini - but these days I want a classic electric Mini . That's not to say I don't like modern Minis. I've test driven a handful of them and enjoyed them all, but they have not yet become as (or more) appealin...

Matt and I try to meet for coffee once a week. We like to sit outside at J&B coffee to talk about life and literature, teaching and religion, and the need for people to treat others with compassion and understanding. We also talk about things with wheels. We both really like things with wheels. But there're times... Find J&B here This week, we met on Saturday afternoon. It was beautiful outside. We sat on the corner facing east. My favorite parking spot at J&B Unlike most Lubbock coffeehouses, J&B isn't situated on a major road. It's in a mostly residential neighborhood near the university. While there's a lot of traffic, there's no high-speed traffic, and the traffic is vehicularly diverse. Everything from Citibuses to Lime scooters rolls past J&B all day long. More so than usual, this week's conversation was filled with long pauses, but they weren't dramatic pauses or reflective pauses, they were noisy traffic pauses....

I hope you enjoy the posts!] As a guy who loves old vehicles but hates the environmental damage they do, I love seeing cool EV conversions, and some of my favorites are the air-cooled VWs. They convert pretty easily, they're light and simple, they're a blast to drive, and they're fun to look at. One company that has excelled in converting old VWs (and Porsches) is Zelectric in California. I've followed their feed for a while now - they build some gorgeous machines and they use high-end AC motors and components. These cars perform as well as they look and accelerate a whole lot faster than a stock VW. Yep, I'm a big fan. But I'm none too wealthy. And their conversions start at $56,000.
